Seattle Gay Lesbian Business Association, 1998

It’s hard to say how many businesses have started because someone needed better lubricant, but Rachel Venning and Claire Cavanah say that’s how Toys in Babeland began. Rachel was in a business school, Claire was pursuing her dream to make films, both were uncertain about their futures. Rachel had just returned from Europe, and the pair was sitting around floating ideas about potential businesses when Rachel spied a tube of a well-known lubricant on the table. A discussion of the product’s lack of merits and the dearth of products designed for women ensued, and the Babes knew they had hit on a brilliant idea. “We felt a little like missionaries at first, because we knew we’d found something that was missing in the community and set about to change that.”
