A customer walked into the store the other day and dropped $500 on Fifty Shades of Grey gear.

OK, let’s do this.

Love it or hate it, Fifty Shades of Grey has a stimulating effect on people’s curiosity and willingness to try new things in the bedroom. We surveyed our customers and of 1065 respondents, 46% said 50 Shades had inspired them to try something new. (81% were already sex toy users).

This week we (at Babeland) talked to the New York Times, the Daily News, Adweek, CBS wants to film in the store… it goes on. Everyone is talking about this movie.

This is the biggest mainstreaming of sex toys event ever. In fact I just read a sentence in The Times UK that mentions the “post sex toy era…” what? Over already? You know its big when people start saying it's over.

E.L. James, from all accounts a very nice woman who unexpectedly wrote one of the 10 top selling books of all time (100million+) licensed the naming rights to a sex toy maker and there is an official 50 Shades of Grey line of toys. We also have a ton of great non-licensed SM toys - my starter kit would include  luxury cuffs from Aslan leather, a simple blindfold, the pinwheel, and some sort of spanky thingy.

Of course you don’t need official gear to get a scene going. Number one is your willingness- to take charge if you’re the top (like Christian) and if you’re the bottom, to give control away.

Christian Grey’s tie is on the cover of the book, why? Because that simple item is all he needs to quickly and effectively restrain Anastasia. But well made cuffs do it safer. London police had 79 incidents of having to rescue people trapped in erotic retraints. Third Officer Dave Brown said, ""I don't know whether it's the 'Fifty Shades' effect, but the number of incidents involving items like handcuffs seems to have gone up.""

What are your thoughts? Are you inspired by 5O shades or non-plussed? Comment here and I’ll pick a winner for this nifty 50 Shades of Grey Aim to Please Set

Leave it in the packaging like any collector’s item and it may grow in value….

E.L. James
