Deep penetrative sex that stimulates the cervix and uterus can lead to orgasm through the vagus nerve. The vagus nerve connects from the brain down through the throat and diaphragm, connecting with the heart, lungs and gut, and right on down to the uterus and cervix. Unlike most nerves the vagus nerve doesn’t go up the spinal column. Researchers (including Dr Beverly Whipple of G-spot fame) have determined that people with spinal injuries (and loss of pelvic and pudendal nerve pathways to the brain) can orgasm via deep vaginal penetration which stimulates the vagus nerve.

Research has not been done on anal penetration yet, but according to science writer Pere Estupinyà some gay men with spinal cord damage report being able to come from anal penetration. That is likely due to the vagus nerve.

Meanwhile other researchers are using vagus nerve stimulation as a treatment for depression. There is a small device that can be surgically implanted which gives micro jolts to the vagus nerve – the electrostim can help people feel better.

The vagus has been called the love nerve because compassion and empathy are correlated with vagus nerves lighting up. Interestingly the vagus passes through the abdomen and connects the “gut brain” to the one up in our skulls.

A lot of websites out there suggest deep breathing to activate the positive effects of the Vagus system. Laughing and sobbing may also have salutary benefits. Yoga sites tout the benefits of pranayama for the vagus and its related emotional well-being.

But back to sex. That deep penetrative fucking which activates the vagus nerve? Try turning the dial up on your orgasm by adding deep breathing and bringing in your throat and diaphragm through vocalization. Those deep gut based moans and howls that sometimes accompany great sex add to vagus nerve action. The payoff may be more than a bigger orgasm. Increased “vagal tone” means a calmer, more compassionate, less anxious you.
