I could never do without these. Some people want to cut corners and pull the leather for the buckle through the other cuff's metal loop, but you'll always end up with worn out and broken restraints. Do yourself a favor: Get some nice cuffs and a couple of connectors and you'll be ready to cuff together ankles or wrists or use a spreader bar without damaging your leather items. I keep a handful of them with my gear.
