Bill and Melinda Gates are the new "pleasure activists." The Gates foundation is offering a $100,000 grant to support the development of a Next Generation Condom that significantly preserves or enhances pleasure. Here's a link to the details: Grandchallenges.org.

In the years we've had Babeland, condoms have improved a little bit. They used to be thicker, less consistent (higher fail rate) and a lot of them were slathered in Nonoxynol-9, which is a spermicide that is an irritant to membranes in the vagina and anus. Oops!

This question came from a Facebook friend: Hi Babeland! I have spent many a-night pondering with my female housemate how female feminists fit into the BDSM world. We were both intrigued about the subject of BDSM, but somehow always came back to the conclusion that we would feel more comfortable if our "master" was actually a "mistress." Why? The answer is not simply AHA…QUEERNESS. Yes, we are both queer and enjoy the sexual presence of women as well as men, but this cannot, and is not, the sole answer. It has to be more complex. We have both experienced sexual trauma from men in the past. Could the answer be the history of our own personal experiences? Does it have to do with the patriarchal power relationships we experience everyday as non-males? I'm beginning to feel the interconnectedness of all of these answers. Since these conversations with my housemate, I have played around in the BDSM world. Mainly through online porn watching and one live play date with a Craigslist man, which involved blindfolds, ropes, cuffs, vibrators, and spanking/slapping…and left me feeling a bit strange. I like watching male dominants and female submissives, as well as female dominants and female submissives via bondage porn sites. But, while watching the former, I always felt pangs of guilt. This is not guilt that one might feel towards the general enjoyment of BDSM. This guilt is not caused by our "sex-phobic culture." I think it might go deeper than that. Am I finding guilt from other women's consented sexual abuse? Is abuse even the correct word? How can I tell that what I watch online is consensual?? I think that is what scares me the most. Are these power relationships in bed simply perpetuating gender hierarchies outside of the bedroom? How does a feminist fit into the BDSM world?

Lots ofcoverage of the Steubenville rape case got me thinking about how do we change this? Part of the horror of this is just how unsurprising it is. Living in a culture where this kind of assault is expected to happen is a core of the problem. It's called rape culture and there's tons of blogs, tumblr posts and videos on the topic. Everything from the idea that short skirts, flirting and getting drunk are all ways of saying "yes" to sex, to thinking that "boys will be boys," to blaming the booze instead of the people who did the crime, are part of rape culture. Everything that makes it seems like the natural order of things that a woman or girl in this situation was raped is part of rape culture.

What we need is to change expectations so that the perpetrators dont feel entitled, and the bystanders don't feel powerless, and the people who hear about it later don't shake their heads and say "what else do you expect when a girl gets drunk?" It isn't invevitable that this happens. People should be able to get stupid drunk and not get raped.

A couple of things I saw out there really point to solutions:

Laci Green's video is awesome- i love how fast she talks and just lays it out, what the expectations should be. Fierce!

Tonally different but also righteous is this letter from a Mom at askmoxie.org, to her sons, advising them how to step in and help a person who is being raped. It's tough to speak up when others are silent and the popular kids are doing wrong, but that's what heroes do.

The Stronic Pulsator is a Sex Machine

I knew I wanted it inside me from the moment I laid eyes and hands on its gentle, firm silicone, contoured shaft and easy to use controls. I really like the elevated ridge towards the base and on the back of the toy. It helped warm me up to the Stronic’s charms as I closed my legs and let it grind up against my clit. I didn’t like how it kept falling out when I used it while laying on my back and had my legs open a bit. The key is to close your legs, but relax your PC muscles and let the toy do its thing. It also easily hit my G-spot when I curved the shaft up slightly. I couldn’t really feel much of anything if I was on my knees using a pillow or mattress to hold it up. The Stronic needs to be free to move! I loved that the first setting was a slow, thrusting pattern to get me going. This past year at Babeland has been amazing, fun, and full of fabulous sex advice. When you spend as much time talking about sex and being surrounded by sex toys all day the way we are, you start to think creatively! That's why we want to share some of our favorite sex tips that have come from our workshops over the past year. We encourage everyone to experiment and be creative, this year and every year, so here are some things to get you started! 1. Speak your mind
We believe that communication is key, both in and out of the bedroom. When you're not in the bedroom, it's a good time to have the "big picture" conversations about boundaries and experimenting.

In the bedroom, things sound a little different. That's why advocate brushing up your dirty talk skills. We love dirty talk because it's hot, fun, and a great way to make sure that everyone involved is on board with what's happening. We know that dirty talk can be intimidating for a lot of people, so we've come up with some easy prompts. To get started, say what you're going to do, "I'm going to suck on your nipples." Then ask a question, "Do you like it when I suck on your nipples like this?". Next, you can offer up something like, "I love sucking on your hard nipples.". Just like that! You're talking dirty. The Dirty Dice are also a great way to get the words flowing. Roll the dice and you'll get a body part and an action. Say it out loud before you do it.

2. Arouse your entire body
When you have the time, we always recommend incorporating your entire body into your sex play because that increases stimulation and arousal.
