In the past, she has indicated an interest in light bondage, and I'd like to surprise her with some toys and gear as a holiday gift. I'd really like to know what specific sex acts show up in the books so that I can get things that would appeal to both of us, but I really don't want to read the books myself (I'm kind of a literary snob, and I've heard the writing is really bad). I know you have a section of Fifty Shades-appropriate products, but do you know of a list of all of the sex they have in the books? If not, could you provide one? I know it's a big thing to ask, but it would provide a very valuable public service for people like me who want to expand our repertoire in the bedroom without having to endure bad prose. Thanks! -- Literary Snob Who Wants to Please His Wife

Rachel and Claire: Understood, and here’s what you need to know. Anastasia is a virgin who is surprised and delighted by her response to Christian’s authoritative sexuality. There is a lot of vanilla sex, including penetration, oral, etc. and Christian is always dominant and in charge so Anastasia can let go and be swept away. So the first order of business in recreating these scenes is taking on that dominant, demanding persona. Rather than catalogue every orgasm in the book, here are some of the most memorable scenes and my tips on recreating them:

1) Elevator Sex- The key here is the “anytime anywhere” idea- the passion you feel is too big to wait for bed. So express your desire with a passionate kiss somewhere unexpected. To really make it a “Fifty Shades”-style kiss, you need to grab her hair and pull down to force her face up to yours, bite her lips and make it a very aggressive kiss.
2) Dirty Talk- Christian is not shy about giving orders and saying what he wants. For example, he demands that Anastasia masturbate for him. Maybe that’s not your turn-on; the key is being assertive and saying it out loud. Let your wife know what you want in no uncertain terms. Dirty Talk 101: Tell her what you’re going to do to her, describe what you’re doing as you do it, then tell her what you did. “I’m gonna fuck you hard… I’m fucking you hard… I fucked you so hard…”
3) Hitting and Spanking- Christian peppers his sexploits with thwacks. He pulls her over his lap, holds her legs down with his leg, and puts his outside arm on her back, ass exposed for spanking. This is a Christian Grey classic move and your wife will probably love it. Use a rubber paddle to take it to the next level.
4) Ben-Wa Balls- This is huge- everyone who reads this book wants to try these sexy, weighted balls. In the book she lubes them up with her mouth, then he puts them inside her, makes her walk around, spanks her and they fuck. If you only do one thing from Fifty Shades of Grey, this is the scene to copy (pages 362-366, in case you want to read it yourself.)
5) Restraints and Riding Crops- Christian has a “Red Room of Pain,” including a giant wooden X on which to secure Anastasia. You can recreate this without the dedicated dungeon- have your wife stand up and secure her wrists behind her back with leather cuffs. After Christian restrains Anastasia it’s all quiver and gasp- teasing her with the crop then a sudden flick of sharp sensation. Tease, then flick, tease, then flick.
6) Flogger- Restrained again and this time flogged. The sensation from flogging can very from soft and light to thud-y and even stingy. In Fifty Shades of Grey, the flogger is described as feathery. So go light, to stay true to text, though, most people like the sensation built up from light to heavier. Pause between strokes to give her a chance to process the sensations.
7) Nipple Clamps, Butt Plugs, Ball Gags and Wrist to Ankle bondage- For wrist to ankle bondage, you need two pairs of cuffs. By books two and three of the trilogy things get intense. These four items will let you reenact the most heavily accessorized scenes in the trilogy.
We have a Fifty Shades of Grey Book and Indulge Your Fantasies Kit that has everything to get you started, too, and you save $34 when you buy these items together.
Have fun, Literary Snob!

Your Sex Question Here________

Babeland's Co-Founders, Rachel Venning and Claire Cavanah, have answered a lot of questions about sex over the past 20 years since Babeland opened its doors and they're available to answer yours, too.
We talk about sex all day every day with the most wonderful people, our customers, and there are definitely common themes to the issues and questions that come up. This list represents our best tips and techniques to take your sex life over the top in 2012. Share your lessons and insights with us in the comments.

1. Throw out what you’ve been told about sex, what you think you should be doing, the way you think you’re supposed to act or respond. It’s making your sex life less fun, less playful, and less fulfilling.

2. All bodies are hot and however your body works is right. Great sex isn’t bestowed on people who look a certain way. Every day, our customers tell us that something about their sex lives doesn’t correspond to the response they think they should be having. None of it is true! All bodies and desires are different. Resolve to have the kind of sex you actually want and to learn what your partner wants, as well.

3. Lube! This one isn’t new, but it’s still one of the most important tools in your nightstand. Lube can take any kind of stimulation and make it feel even better. While we can offer some helpful advice about different types of lube for different activities - thicker lube for anal sex, silicone lube for use in water - what works best is a personal preference. Try the Sliquid Lube Cube so that you can sample six different kinds of lube.

4. Dirty talk is magical. Take any kind of stimulation and suddenly by talking about it, the whole act can feel even more intense and incredible. If it feels awkward, get started by describing the action. It’s okay to feel a bit silly at first. "I'm rubbing you with this finger vibe," or "I'm going to slide this vibrating cock ring on you."

5. Better communication via a Yes/No/Maybe list. Make a list of all the sex acts you can think of, from kissing to fisting to 69 and BDSM, or take the list from Moregasm: Babeland’s Guide to Mind-Blowing Sex. You and your partner get to mark each act indicating your willingness to do it. At the end, you have a hot sex menu to choose from! In the New Year, you can use this as a tool to see what you want to try out for the first time and what you want to learn about.

6. Try something new, like backdoor sex. One of the most common questions we're asked is about how to start out with anal penetration. We love answering this question and there’s so much we could tell you, but it mostly comes down to this: use thick lube, go slowly, start with something small. Anal sex shouldn’t hurt, and it’s a nasty, persistent myth that it will. It should feel really, really good for both women and men.

7. Use the right tools for stimulating the G-spot. A good G-spot toy has a dramatic curve and can be made of a hard material so that you can put pressure on the G-spot. The Uma and the Gigi are two of our favorites.

8. Try a twist on an old position. Instead of the missionary position for anal or vaginal sex, lift the butt of the person being penetrated. This lets the other partner be on their knees, instead of holding themselves up on their hands. Try using the Heart Wedge. It’s a dense foam cushion designed for sex and it positions the butt at the perfect angle to enhance G-spot or prostate stimulation. It also opens up the front of the body so that you can stimulate the clit or cock.

9. Touch, stroke, and play with your partner’s whole body. There are so many different kinds of stimulation. Try a massage candle to loosen them up all over. Running a Pinwheel up an arm gives a delicious chill. A small, soft leather flogger can bring a sexy sting to a butt. Use your imagination.

10. Have fun! Laugh! Be messy! Make weird noises! Let go of your inhibitions. There’s no right way to have sex, so take the pressure off yourself and enjoy it.houldn’t hurt, and it’s a nasty, persistent myth that it will. It should feel really, really good for both women and men.

Babeland Staff Picks: Holiday Gifts

When you work in a cool retail store like Babeland, your friends and loved ones are always hoping that you'll share freebies, pick up on their subtle hints and spontaneously buy them something, and offer them a friends and family discount. We do all that, of course, but when it comes to the holidays, it's our chance to go all out and share the wealth. We polled a cross-section of Babelanders to get their top picks for holiday gifts and came up with excellent ideas.

Anne, Babeland's Marketing Director, is a single mom who sings the praises of the Bunny Love Kit. She says, "It's got one of the most popular sex toys of all time (the Rabbit Habit) in it, it comes pre-wrapped, and the savings are great. Every year, I give it to at least one of my friends — usually a stressed out mom who doesn't have much time to shop for sex toys, and could really use the blissful orgasms this gift provides." Any moms or stressed out ladies on your holiday list would seriously enjoy this gift.

Lauren, a Sex Educator at Babeland SoHo, has a lot of naughty friends who need stocking stuffers. She's going with His/Hers Orgasm in a Box Kits. She says, "They're the perfect package for those looking for a cheap thrill, complete with great beginner toys: Blossom Sleeve and Sonic Ring Kit for the guys, Silver Bullet and Bunny Tickler attachment for the gals. They even come with lube and batteries, so my friends will have everything they need." As an added bonus, $2 of the sale of every Orgasm in a Box Kit is donated to food banks in New York and Seattle.

Babeland E-Commerce Manager, Greta, plans on using the new remote control panty vibe, the OhMiBod Clube Vibe 2.OH as a sexy gift for her date. "So my plan is to buy this, put the vibrating part in my underwear, go out to a club with my unsuspecting date, and hand them the remote with a wink. It's a gift for both of us." Now that's what we call spreading the holiday cheer.

For more advice from our savvy staff, check out the full list here. In addition to the How To and Sex Tips portion of our website, we also have an area on our fabulous Tumblr where you can ask a sexuality educator questions directly. If we think your question might be a question that others have (and often, it is!), we'll post a lengthier response on the blog as well as answer you directly (anonymous, of course, if you prefer).

Inspired by this question on our Facebook Fan Page about the safety of glass toys and concerns with the possibility of lead in the glass, I decided to do some digging into how safe our glass toys are and how you can tell that the toys you are buying are good for you. I enlisted my trusty friends Destin, who is in Customer Service, and Phoebe, who is our Buyer, to see if we could find out more. Here is a brief overview of what we have learned. Check back next week for the complete interview with the manufacturer of our lovely Candy Colored Glass Dildos, Standard Glass.

Destin writes,
"We here at Babeland are used to a wide variety of considerations around product safety so when one of our customers asked us about the lead levels in our glass toys we were excited to know more ourselves! The fine folks who hand make our Candy Colored Dildo were gracious enough to answer even our most nitpicky questions. What we found is that lead can be a common ingredient in everything from the highest end to the least expensive glass products. It lowers the melting point, makes certain cutting techniques work better and adds sparkle to the glass, amongst other things. Often lead is one of the ingredients in proprietary blends used to make all those pretty colors of glass you see in the world and possibly even the colors you see inside some of our toys. The best news of all is that every one of our glass toy offerings is designed so that you are completely safe from any lead exposure. All of our glass toy offerings are made with a surface layer of either soda-lime glass, or Pyrex, neither of which contains lead. Rock on rock hard and lead free!"

Make sure you check back in the coming weeks for the full interview from Standard Glass and more great info about making sure your toys are the safest they can be.

If one customer has this question, chances are others do too so we’re bringing them to you!

Q: I'm new to vibrators but want one to use with my partner during sex, what would you recommend?

A: When people are using a vibrator with a partner, they usually want something small'ish, so they can easily tuck it between body parts. Since you're new to vibrators, I'd also recommend looking for something that has a variable speed, so you can be sure you're getting just the right amount of vibration.

Some vibrators that fit that bill are the following:

The Lucky 7: This vibrator is small but it packs a punch with seven different speeds. It's very tiny so you'll have no problem getting it to reach wherever you want

The Laya Spot: I love this toy because it's ergonomically shaped to fit right where you need it. It has almost as many speeds as the Lucky 7 and the placement of the controls make it very easy to change those speeds if you need to, even if things are hot and heavy. The Laya Spot has been around since I first started working here almost six years ago - for a reason.

The Nea: This vibrator is on the buzzy side, but it still has adjustable speeds and it is quite thin, perfect for slipping in between two people. It's also rechargeable!

Ultimately it's up to you to decide what will work best - so get to work picking each one up and feeling them. If one customer has this question, chances are others do too so we’re bringing them to you!

Q: I can't find my G-Spot, am I broken?

A: The short answer is not at all. Here's the long answer: everyone's body is a little bit different so your G-Spot might be in a slightly different place or feel slightly different when it's stimulated than descriptions you've read. Additionally, sometimes people think they're looking in the right place, but they aren't. to make sure you're on the right track try the following:

1. Go to the bathroom first

2. Get really aroused, maybe have an orgasm

3. Insert your fingers or a toy 1-2 inches inside the vaginal canal

4. Angle your fingers or the toy towards your belly button (the front of your body)

5. Rub your fingers or the toy back and forth and experiment with different pressures

If you've found it, you should feel either a pleasurable sensation and you may also feel like you have to go to the bathroom - this is a really good sign that you're there!

For more information, check out the Smart Girls Guide to the G-Spot, the G-Spot Center website or one of our workshops!

Lastly, it's important to remember that while some people may think that fireworks are going off when they find their G-Spot, that's not going to be the case for everyone. Some people love to have their ears nibbled on while other people hate it - the same goes for the G-Spot. So, when you find it, if it still isn't everything you imagined it would be, that still doesn't mean you're broken, it just means your body is different.

Ask Babeland: What dildo should I get next?

In Ask Babeland, real Babeland Sex Educators provide real answers to real questions that they received from customers during their shifts. If one customer has this question, chances are others do too so we’re bringing them to you!

Q: I've been using the Silk 2 for anal penetration and I want to get something bigger, what should I get?

A: Ultimately, that decision is up to you, however, I would recommend picking something that is wider, but not too much wider. As you've probably discovered, the ass needs time and loving attention to help it relax and take in bigger and bigger objects. If you go too big too fast, you'll wind up in pain and that's not what we want. The Woody, Mustang, or the Leo would all be great picks - they're about a centimeter wider than the Silk 2 and they're both still nice and smooth. The head might feel a bit more intense going in so be prepared for that. And remember, you'll want to keep using lube!

Ask Babeland: Can I stimulate my nipples without using clamps?

In Ask Babeland, real Babeland Sex Educators provide real answers to real questions that they received from customers during their shifts. Q: Can I stimulate my nipples without using clamps?

A: A few weeks ago I would have had to say, not really. All of the toys we had specifically designed for nipple stimulation had some aspect of a clamp. But that was before we got the Incoqnito Droplet Necklace in stock. There's a small (and powerful!) vibrator inside each end of the necklace so you can wear it around you neck at the perfect level for stimulation. There's also a small tassel if you want to attach the vibrators to your nipples (but not clamp them). Not only that, but you can wear the necklace all day long and no one will know what it is! It's perfectly disguised as beautiful jewelry.

Ask Babeland: What lube do you recommend for anal play?

Welcome to the inaugural question in our new Babeland blog series – Ask Babeland. In Ask Babeland, real Babeland Sex Educators provide real answers to real questions that they received from customers during their shifts. If one customer has this question, chances are others do too so we’re bringing them to you!

Q: What lube do you recommend for anal play?

A: This is a great question - thank you for asking it! The ass does not self lubricate, so any time you're going to play with it, you absolutely want to have lube. The question is, which lube is best?

For beginners, we recommend a thicker lube - something that has a honey-like consistency (in science terms, a high viscosity). The reason for this is two-fold. First, the lube is going to stay where you want it to stay - watery lubes go sliding all over the place but a gel lube will just plop right down and wait for you to spread it around.

Second, a thicker lube provides a nice cushion-y coating around whatever is going inside or onto the ass. This reduces friction and helps everything feel happier.

I recommend Maximus and Sassy Booty lube for anyone interested in anal play. If you already have Babelube on hand, it will do nicely as well.

Ask Babeland: My friend's vibrator was too intense...

In Ask Babeland, real Babeland Sex Educators provide real answers to real questions that they received from customers during their shifts. If one customer has this question, chances are others do too so we’re bringing them to you!

Q: My friend tried a vibrator that was too intense for her, which one was that?

A: While we definitely have some vibrators that are really intense, in the end, everyone's bodies are different so your friend may have found a vibrator to be too intense that many people might describe as not intense at all.

Additionally, your body is different from your friends, so you could actually love the exact vibration that she found to be too much. That's why we try to give descriptions of the vibration, and in our stores, let you hold the toys so you can get a sense for how they feel.

If you're not sure what intensity level you'd like, I recommend picking a toy that has a wide range of intensities, that way you can play around with them and figure out what is right for you. You may even find that over one session with the vibrator, you want different intensities.

I recommend the Gigi, the Blueberry Buzz or the Laya Spot. If you want to stay away from too intense, then don't get the Hitachi or the Water Shimmer right now - they really pack a punch!

Ask Babeland: Which is better, the Gigi or the Liv?

In Ask Babeland, real Babeland Sex Educators provide real answers to real questions that they received from customers during their shifts. If one customer has this question, chances are others do too so we’re bringing them to you!

Q: Which is better, the Gigi or the Liv?

A: If you're using the toy externally, they're basically the same so you can buy whichever one you like better. If you're going to use it for internal stimulation, then you need to think about what you're looking for. The Gigi is a great G-spot toy, as you might have figured out from the name. The curve will hit the G-spot in a great way. If you prefer deeper penetration, then you'll want to get the Liv. Its smooth shape will provide a little bit of G-spot stimulation but will really be great for general penetration.

Both the Liv and the Gigi have a terrific range of speed as well as pulsing sensations and both allow you to mix and match those to find the type of stimulation that's right for you. They also both are made of high-quality silicone and hard plastic and they're both rechargeable!

Ask Babeland: How far should I insert my vibrator?

In Ask Babeland, real Babeland Sex Educators provide real answers to real questions that they received from customers during their shifts. If one customer has this question, chances are others do too so we’re bringing them to you!

Q: How far should I insert my vibrator?

A: The short answer: until it stops feeling good.

The long answer: That depends. If you're looking to stimulate the G-spot and you have a toy with a curve like the Orchid G or the Gigi, then only insert the vibrator 1-2 inches in, otherwise, that curve will miss your G-spot. Most of your nerve endings are there anyway so focusing vibration on the first couple of inches can feel great no matter what.

If you enjoy deeper penetration, then gently explore with your vibrator to see where it feels most comfortable. You may press against your cervix, a sensation that some folks love and others find painful. You may also be able to tuck the vibrator behind the cervix, which can be a sensitive spot for many.

Ultimately, using a vibrator is about exploring your body and how it responds. Have fun, go slowly and listen to what your body is telling you and you can't go wrong!

Ask Babeland: Why would I want to buy a glass toy?

In Ask Babeland, real Babeland Sex Educators provide real answers to real questions that they received from customers during their shifts. If one customer has this question, chances are others do too so we’re bringing them to you!

Q: Why would I want to buy a glass toy?

A: When people first look at a glass toy, I can almost see the image they have in their head of the last time they broke a wine glass and watch them shudder as they imagine the glass dildo doing the same thing, but inside them.

Let me be the first to assure you that this is highly unlikely if not nearly impossible. The next time you are in a store with glass toys, pick one up and try to break it just by using your hands (not dropping it on the floor). You won't be able to do it, so your vagina shouldn't be able to either. Some glass toys are actually made out of pyrex, the same glass as those heavy duty mixing bowls we all love so much. In other words, they're made to last.

So, now that we've set that fear aside, why do people buy them? Lots of reasons. First, they're absolutely gorgeous. If looks are important to you or you're looking for a gift that will really wow someone, it doesn't get any prettier than a glass toy. Our Candy Colored Glass Dildos (pictured) are individually made, each one is unique.

Because of their smooth surfaces, glass toys are nice and slick and with a little lube, they provide amazing, friction-free sensations. Glass toys are also just about as firm as you can get. This does mean that you need to use them gently, however, the firmness can provide a lot of amazing sensations (especially for the G-spot).

Last, but certainly not least, you can cool down or heat up a glass toy, further increasing the sensations you can feel. Basically, glass toys are a fantastic all around toy for personal use or for a gift. Do you have a glass toy? What do you think of it? Q: I want to try a strap-on but I'm not ready to commit too much. Do you have something for newbies?

A: Absolutely! I would recommend the Babeland Strap-On Beginners Kit. It has a classy looking but not too expensive harness that has a simple and easy to use design. The back pad (where the dildo rests) is a leather material for stability while the straps are nylon which makes them easy to clean. The O-rings are adjustable so you can use any size dildo you want. The kit does come with a dildo, however, so you don't have to worry about making that additional purchase. The harness also has a front pocket for a vibrator to provide extra stimulation for you and your partner. This kit also comes with some lube to help make sure everything is nice and slick.

As a reminder, this harness is meant as a beginner kit and isn't necessarily designed to last you for the rest of your life. Once you get the hang of it, I would recommend coming back and looking at the Jaguar or the Terra Firma.

Congratulations on buying your first harness!

Ask Babeland: What vibrators can I use for my clit during intercourse?

In Ask Babeland, real Babeland Sex Educators provide real answers to real questions that they received from customers during their shifts. Q: What vibrators can I use for my clit during intercourse?

A: You have several different options for this - let's walk through them.

First, there are small vibrators. They're easy to hold and slip between two people. They're also generally easy to control. I really like the Lucky 7 because it's one of the few small vibrators that has multiple speeds. You can also try a finger-vibe - they're even easier to use since you just slip them on your finger. Fantasy Fingers or the Fukuoku (on sale now!) are perfect for this.

Second, you can try a vibrating cock ring. These are worn by your partner at the base of their body and make contact with the clitoris during penetration. The Sonic Ring Kit is the perfect basic vibrating cock ring but if you're not sure how you'll feel about them, you can get the disposable Innervibe. If you discover that vibrating cock rings are your thing, then you'll want to invest in the high-quality and well-designed Bo cock ring.

Last, and most certainly not least is the We Vibe vibrator. For many people looking for clitoral stimulation during intercourse, this toy meets all their needs and more. The We Vibe is designed to be worn during penetration. It's shaped like a "U" - one part of the U sits inside on the G-Spot and the other sits outside on the clit. The bend in the U is small and thin so it doesn't get in teh way of penetration. Add a little lubricant and you're ready to go! This toy not only provides and constant and direct stimulation during penetration, it can also be used as a hands free toy when you're on your own. It's made out of silicone, is rechargeable, waterproof and has two speeds. Basically, it's a dream come true.

Ask Babeland: Will this bullet vibrator be a good G-Spot toy?

In Ask Babeland, real Babeland Sex Educators provide real answers to real questions that they received from customers during their shifts. Q: "Will this bullet vibrator be a good G-Spot toy?"

A: That's a great question. Based on their shape, a lot of people assume that the egg shaped sex toys with chords known as bullet vibrators are meant for internal use - sort of a plop it in and go kind of thing. Actually, these toys are generally designed to be used externally just about anywhere you want to put them.

These toys are much better suited to external use because they need a lot of guidance and once they're inside you, it's hard to do much guiding. The G-Spot generally needs a firm, direct, upwards pressure and the bullet vibrators, although rounded, usually don't quite do the trick.

For focused G-Spot stimulation, I recommend the Orchid G or the GiGi (pictured). Both have great curves and provide the firm pressure the G-Spot loves.
