Support Mothers and Families

The US economy can be particularly brutal for mothers and children.  Check out these statistics from Momsrising.org, a new grassroots organization founded by Joan Blades and Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner, authors of The Motherhood Manifesto:

• In the US, a quarter of families with children under six live in poverty, and at least 9 million children don't have any health care.

• A 2005 study found that mothers are 44% less likely to be hired than non-mothers for the same job, given the exact same resume and experience.

• More than 40,000 kindergarteners are home alone after school.

Momsrising.com is campaigning for positive legislative change that will directly help American families, including fair wages, paid family leave, flexible work, universal health care for kids, quality affordable childcare, and family-friendly TV as well as educational after-school programs.

Utilizing the MoveOn.org model of web-based activism, MomsRising is “working to build a massive grassroots online resource to move motherhood and family issues to the forefront of the country's awareness.”
