Dorm Life

Dear Rachel and Claire,
I'm a student stuck between living in a dorm and at my parents' house for the next two years.  I love solo play, and am dying to try out a toy or two. I'm lucky enough to live in a single room, but I share a bathroom and kitchen with at least 3 other girls at a time. Could you recommend any unobtrusive, innocent-seeming toys that I could easily spirit away and don't have to sanitize by boiling or extensive washing?  Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

A:

Dear DL,

There are times when a girl wants her privacy.  Usually the number one concern is noise.  For the ultimate in silent vibration, choose a Wahl 7-in-1.  The electric vibrator comes with 7 interchangeable heads to play with, and as long as you don't squeal with delight, your roommates won't hear a thing.  Other possibilies are the finger tipped size Fukuoku- it's very quiet and cordless, or the Waterdancer, small, quiet, and waterproof, for when you do get a moment alone in the shower. For discretion on the go, the Lipstick Vibe is a purse size vibrator that looks exactly like a lipstick.  No one will know unless they decide to try the shade.  When they twist the tube instead of a splash of color they'll get a tickle of vibration.

Except for the James Bond-ish lipstick vibe, I think savvy roommates and curious parents will deduce that your sex toys are sex toys if they see them. So keep your private things out of sight.  All sorts of toys—vibrators, dildos, buttplugs– can put discreetly in a drawer or a box that says "private!" Thorough washing with antibacterial soap and hot water should prevent the need to boil up a sex toy soup.
