My partner and I love watching erotic videos together.  Lately we have noticed that there just isn't a lot of lesbian porno that is based in reality (i.e. short-nailed, slightly butch, and/or delightfully femme models). It’s the sad truth that most mainstream “girl-girl” movies do little to satisfy real life lesbians who get turned on by realistic dyke sex.  Lesbian pornographers are few and far between, but the few titles out there are well worth watching.  Suburban Dykes is the classic but timeless story of a lesbian couple who decide to spice up their love life by calling a 900# dominatrix and hiring a call butch who does home deliveries!  It features sexy performances by femme Nina Hartley, a très butch Sharon Mitchell, and a tomboyish Pepper.  I think you’ll like it.  S.I.R. Video, out of Oakland, has two titles, Hard Love/How to Fuck in High Heels (2 stories on 1 tape), and Sugar High Glitter City.  Both feature lots of San Francisco sexy glittery femmes and mannish butches.  There is also a series called San Francisco Lesbians- we carry #7, #8 and #9.  They star dykes from San Francisco with their own sartorial and sexual styles and sometimes their real-life girlfriends.  The vignettes are plotless and the production values minimal, but the sex is realistic and the bodies unencumbered with excesses of hairspray, nails or silicone (unless you count the dildos).

None of these flicks had the resources of money, time and experience that went into Bound and If These Walls Could Talk, so if you don’t adjust your expectations accordingly, you’ll be disappointed.  While they don’t offer subtle characterizations, gripping plotlines, or the million dollar lighting of Hollywood productions, they do show real dykes doing it, and it’s a treat to watch.

As for why dyke porn isn’t as good as gay boy porn, I think it has to do with practice, practice, practice.  The more porn dykes make, & the more lesbian pornographers get to see each other’s work, the better the productions will become.  Of course the bigger the audience, the more incentive for talented lesbian filmmakers to make porn, so the best thing we the porn watching public can do is to support the work that is out there, and clamor for more.
