An Interview with Christian and Rudy of German Sex Toy Company Fun Factory

Here at Babeland, we've long been fans of Fun Factory sex toys — they're bright, colorful, fun, high-quality, and thoughtfully designed with pleasure in mind. Fun Factory was one of the first toy designers to show the world that vibrators need not be tacky jelly rubber playthings designed to be used a few times and then thrown away; instead, they've combined a fresh and appealing aesthetic with the exacting quality that we've all come to expect from German-made electronics. How did Fun Factory begin?

We started off small in 1996, in a house near Pasadena. From there, it quickly turned into a sort of grassroots movement for 'alternative,' better-quality toys. The beginning was some of the best times of our lives — we didn't know just how great the product was! Soon, the living room became too small, and we expanded to a warehouse in Burbank.

It turned out that the U.S. market was longing for a different type of erotic toy with with a focus on product quality rather than packaging appeal. So we took a long shot and decided to give it a chance, in spite of all the difficulties with importing from Europe. All I can say is, quality pays off; especially over the last two years, I see more and more that our retailers and their customers are able to distinguish more and more between products manufactured in China and ours, which are 100% manufactured in Germany.

How is Fun Factory different from other sex toy designers?

We are the originals! We're not focused on copying existing products; we're always trying to come up with innovative new products that are ergonomically designed for the body. And since we manufacture our products in Germany, we have complete quality control, and everything is tested before being released.

We also aim to manufacture healthy products, and to be as "green" a company as possible in terms of material (such as medical-grade silicone) and recycling. Our new line, "Click-n-Charge," has no batteries, and one charger can be used for the whole line of products.

Yes, we're so excited about the new toy line! Can you tell us more about how it came about?

Dirk Bauer, the owner of Fun Factory in Germany, is a technician who really wanted to get away from batteries to a new generation of rechargeable vibrators. He was inspired by Mac computers, and used similar technology in terms of a magnetic charging device.

And how has the "Click-n-Charge" line been received so far?

In Germany, at one of the biggest trade shows, people just loved the new magnetic charging technique on a vibrator. It's already a part of so many people's lifestyles; people love to adapt to smart, practical and well-designed products overall. And of course, the American consumer loves great products just as much as everybody else. Americans have always embraced the new and progressive over the outdated!

We think our customers will embrace these new toys for sure. And finally, what's next on the horizon for Fun Factory?

We've always got our eye on new products and inventions, but now, we're focusing not only on women's pleasure...next, we'll be introducing a toy for men! Stay tuned.
