Lubrication

Slippery When Wet!

The wetness of sex is in our language ("that makes me wet!") and in our bodies. It's a truth of female sexual response. When women are turned on, there is an increase in vaginal lubrication. This lubrication protects the mucous membranes of the vagina from being damaged during penetration, and it makes for smooth, slick, more pleasurable penetration. But the amount of natural vaginal lubrication can really vary. Often it is not enough to go the distance through an entire sexual encounter. There are many factors affecting women's natural vaginal lubrication. Lubrication is a hormone thing; it varies during our cycle and is affected by such factors as smoking, diet, caffeine, medication and age, to name a few. Also, condoms and other latex safe sex barriers are drying, so using water-based lube with latex is vital for pleasurable safer sex.

So Many Lubes...

The joy of lube isn't a female sexual secret. Plenty of guys discover the joy of a dollop of massage oil or butter in their palm during adolescent masturbation. Oils stay slicker for longer than water-based lube and are generally thicker. But oils will break down latex-—so no Vaseline, Crisco, massage oil, or mayonnaise from the fridge if you are practicing safer sex. Oils don't break down quickly, and are an inviting host for bacterium. Since using soap inside the vagina is bad for vaginal health, introducing oils into the vagina is a bad idea. For pussy play, use water-based lubes. As for back-door delights, the difference between ecstatic anal sex and a painful experience can be a generous application of a thicker lube like Liquid Silk. If you're looking for a long-lasting lube, consider the new brand of silicone-based lubes like Eros. These stay slick for a long time, and won't wash off with water, so they're great for sex in tubs or showers (it washes off with soap and water). Silicone lubes are not always compatible with silicone toys, so don't use them together.
