Spermicides and STDs

Nonoxynol-9 is effective as a spermicide, but many people don’t know that it is a detergent that can irritate sensitive tissues and actually promote the spread of STDs. Condoms lubricated with nonoxynol-9 have not been proven more effective in preventing pregnancy than regular lubricated condoms. If you, or a partner, are irritated by nonoxynol-9, consider using regular condoms with extra lube from a bottle.
