An Interview with Ethan Imboden (Founder, Chairman, and Chief Creative Officer of Jimmyjane)

BL: What inspired you to start Jimmyjane?

JJ: My background is in product design and strategy — as a consultant, I worked on products for a wide variety of clients, ranging from Nike to Motorola, Dell to Herman Miller. After launching my own design studio in 2002, I was approached by three potential clients who wanted me to look into sex products. Nobody had come to me for this before — needless to say, I was intrigued.

When attending my first trade show in the industry, it struck me that this was a category that could really benefit from the type of design discipline that I practiced. It seemed obvious to me that if anything should be elegantly designed, it's the objects that engage our sexuality.

I knew I was on to something when my friends discovered what I was working on, and I was inundated with their responses. That sealed it for me — I launched Jimmyjane in late 2004.

BL: What's the most important thing you've learned about what your customers want from their toys?

JJ: Sexuality is as individual and intricate as a fingerprint, so there is no one-size-fits-all design. Our products are uniquely versatile and offer a range of possibilities to explore. That said, in our ongoing dialogue with our customers, there's one desire that comes up again and again — power. The stronger the motor, the more exclamation points we get on our customer feedback emails.

Overall, we've been pleased to see customers become savvier. They're asking more of their sex accessories — innovation, quality construction, body-safe materials, eco-conscious design, and above all else, pleasure. They're beginning to demand the same level of sophistication from their sexual products as they expect from other products they buy. We think they deserve that, and more.

BL: Why do you think your particular combination of design and pleasure has been so successful?

JJ: We operate on a very simple principle: if we exceed our customers' expectations, they will reward us with their loyalty. We're always pushing ourselves to design more pleasurable products, and we emphasize our customers' experience above all else. What's the use of a pretty vibrator that doesn't perform? While they appreciate the Jimmyjane aesthetic, our customers know that it's what's inside that counts. For example, though the patented Replaceable Motor in our LITTLE SOMETHING line is rarely seen, it makes those vibrators the longest-lasting in the world. We also believe in honest design and steer clear of fake materials — if a detail looks like stainless steel, it's steel, not chromed plastic.

Finally, I think our customers trust our name and have come to appreciate our level of care and devotion to quality. We're the only company in the industry to stand behind our products with a three-year warranty. It also doesn't hurt that our vibrators are some of the most powerful and pleasurable out there.

BL: What kind of reaction/feedback have you gotten about the Form 2, your newest vibrator?

JJ: We've been overwhelmed by the positive response! Yves B�har and I were pretty sure we were onto something when we completed the first prototype. We were amazed by the intensity of the vibration it produced, and actually had to take it down a notch. However, we couldn't have predicted it would become this popular. Form 2 has become a top-selling vibrator across the industry, as well as on Babeland.com. It was voted the #1 Sex Toy of 2009 on Fleshbot, and is in the running for a major design award. Form 2 is part of the Pleasure to the People series of waterproof rechargeable vibrators, so the great news is that there are more to come.

BL: Give our customers a glimpse of how a toy is created, from conception to design to actualization.

JJ: We have an atypical approach — while many companies view the number of new product introductions to be a measure of growth and success, we emphasize quality over quantity. By focusing on fewer products, we're able to dedicate deep development and exceptional attention to detail to each new release. We draw inspiration from our friends in art, design and fashion, and our ideas coalesce through through research and constant interaction with customers and sex educators. Once we have a concept, it's taken through the entire design process in-house, giving us the ability to ensure it meets our exacting standards for design, functionality and quality. For an innovative vibrator like Form 2, it will be over two years from the time we initiate the project to the time it's previewed in the press.

BL: What's coming next?

JJ: In September, we're launching Form 3, the next product in our Pleasure to the People series of waterproof, rechargeable vibrators. While it's too early to share the specifics with you, I can say that it focuses on connection. Though it's unlike anything you've seen before, it also remains exceptionally intuitive to use. I think couples especially will find a lot to love... I'm going to have to leave it at that or I'll spoil the surprise.

BL: Finally, why do you think Jimmyjane and Babeland have been so successful together?

JJ: In my (immodest) opinion, we both kick ass at what we do. We have shared values, so our partnership is a natural fit. From the day Babeland launched, you emphasized quality, safety, education and customer service, and these have also always been our focus here at Jimmyjane. We're both committed to connecting people with the right product for them, and ultimately, we're both driven by the same goal — satisfied customers.
