Dr. Robert Surfs the Pipeline Sleeve

by Doctor Robert (winner of our second annual guest toy reviewer contest)

As I?ve written before, the gold standard for solo-sex toys, in this man?s humble opinion, is the Fleshlight. It is a high-quality device and its price bears this out. When I saw the relatively inexpensive Pipeline in Babeland?s catalog, I decided to give it a shot.

The Pipeline is reversible. In "smooth surface" mode, the inside is smooth-bore and the toy?s ribs cover its outside, looking like the fins on an electronic or automotive heat sink. (Mine had a rather noticeable molding defect on the smooth surface which fortunately didn?t get in the way of using the toy). When the Pipeline is reversed again and the ribs are inside of the toy, they go wavy like leaves of curly lettuce. The Pipeline comes ready to go with its wavy ribs facing inward. Applying water-based lube with my fingers (oil-based lubes and sex toys generally don?t mix) felt like I was engaging in foreplay with a jellyfish! The ribs felt kind of nice once I got down to business, but the Fleshlight was still ahead by a length. I found the smooth surface of the toy to be a bit too smooth. I didn?t get any real friction out of it. One thing I did enjoy in either "ribs" or smooth-surface mode was doing finger-play on the head of my penis through the open end of the thing.

The Pipeline is made from blue elastomer which is supposed to be free of pthalates, nasty petrochemicals often found in plastics and suspected of causing numerous health problems. It did however smell unpleasantly ?plasticy? to me, even after cleaning, and it is also porous, making complete disinfection dubious at best. Babeland recommends that you use condoms with toys such as this for the sake of safety and sanitation. All in all, I don?t think that I?ll be trading in my Fleshlight anytime soon.
