How To Build A Sex Room In Your Space

By: Carol Queen, PhD

sex roomSex can be fun anywhere, but if you’ve got some space to trick out as a special sex room, ooh-la-la the games can really begin! You might be watching the Netflix hit “How to Build a Sex Room”—or maybe just seeing the hashtag all over the place, but I assure you that although we at Babeland do not advertise ourselves as interior decorators, we do know what kinds of things you might enjoy in a room set up for sex.

First let’s think about you and your partner/s. What’s your style? And what’s your sex focus? The former question helps you think about things like color, decor, and theme, and the kind of sex you want to have in your special room can help fine-tune all that. Will it be a basic black dungeon? A red and velvety bordello? An airy Tantra space with sheer golden drapes? What kind of artwork do you want? Does it center a bed—or a bondage cross and a cute cage for your human puppy aka your boyfriend?

Also, you need to know your space if you are going to hang a sling or other gear that will be weight-bearing. Melanie Rose, host of “How to Build a Sex Room”, mentions safe spaces for this purpose, and she is so right—you must install any hanging or suspension gear safely. (For that matter, do you own your home? Great! Drill holes in weight-bearing beams to your heart’s content. If you’re a renter, you’ll want to know about free-standing gear that lets you play your way and still get your deposit back.) Slings are available for hanging installation OR to hang in a sturdy door frame. Four-point bondage can happen right on your bed—even if it has no bedposts!

(But trust us, if you are getting a new bed for the sex room… bedposts! And you can trick it out with satin sheets to match the decor, but toss a waterproof Fascinator Throw on top—it feels delicious and handles any wet spots you might make.)

Sex furniture and pillows, like Liberator’s great line of gear, lets you assume all kinds of positions—and their beautiful Esse chaise is a perfect centerpiece item for even a compact sex room.

What kind of play do you want to be set up for? If you are a sensual Tantra type, you might want massage gear (don’t forget the warming massage candles, also useful if you veer into kink on the weekends!). Anyone of any erotic predilection might want toys galore, from vanilla to—just maybe—BDSM gear. And let’s not forget the joys of dressing up and roleplay (whether you like a crisp uniform, want a boudoir devoted to crossdressing, or want to put all your alluring corsets on display).

Where will you store all that sexy stuff? Do you need to make sure a closet or sex chest is ready to keep it all neat? If your sex room doubles as a guest room—or just to maintain order rather than erotic chaos—you’ll want a place to store those toys and gear. Maybe a rolling cart to serve as a lube dispenser!

Finally—if your bank balance doesn’t allow for any remodeling, remember what the sleep experts say about your bedroom: use it only for sleep and sex! So maybe a little erotic bedroom refurb is on the menu even if a home overhaul is not. Sleep sweet—and make your room a sexy lair to use when you’re awake!
