Oh happy day! The Obama administration released their 2010 budget and it has NO, I repeat, NO funding for abstinence-only education. This day has been a long time coming. We've worked so hard to get good, evidence-based information into classrooms so that the next generation can grow up empowered, knowledgeable and most of all, safe.Shelby Knox (of the amazing documentary) made a little video blog of her reaction to the news and it's fantastic.httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fio2DOp9py0Before I go celebrate, I do want to point out that this budget isn't all sunshine and roses. Obama so far has done nothing about the Hyde Ammendment which makes it impossible to use any federal monies for abortions and it looks like this budget may cut some important programs. I haven't had a chance to read it all the way through yet so I'll update in the next few days if it looks like that's the case.Regardless, I want to say a huge THANK YOU to the Obama administration for this incredibly huge leap in the right direction. We all need to support this move as much as possible right now so that the administration and congress will know that we've got their backs as move forward on other pieces of their agenda.Epilogue: I ordinarily love the work of the Center for Reproductive Rights but I think they got a bit mixed up in their press release today. They focused first on criticising the administration for not repealing the Hyde Ammendment then, way down at the bottom, got around to thanking them for removing ab-only funding. To me, that's not the best way to build a working relationship with an administration. We all like to be praised first and nudged after. Maybe so many not-for-profits are so used to always issuing press releases that bash the administration (when Bush was in charge) that we've forgotten how to be excited about something. We still have 3.5 years, let's take a moment to celebrate, people.
