emerginganswersI'm a little late in reporting this but in case you didn't know - the Labor HHS Appropriations committee recently approved funding for abstinence only education. Not only did they approve it, but they INCREASED funding. We already know scientifically that these programs are no more effective than comprehensive sex education programs. Given that they are medically inaccurate and stigmatizing, they are in all likelihood harmful in ways that are very difficult to measure. The Democrats have backed down on a lot of things but I was hoping that they would get their acts together on this one. 86% of parents in this country support comprehensive sex education for their children. There are fantastic sex education programs out there. For instance, the Emerging Answers 2007 report just came out from the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. In it are seven programs that have been proven to be effective at reducing teen pregnancies. They are all comprehensive sex ed programs.Democrats, get it together and stop listening to the small but vocal right wing, sex hating, homophobic people who insist that churches and other religious organization receive federal funding to do work that is harmful to our adolescents!
