It's been awhile since we've discussed phthalates on this blog. In case you're not familiar with them, they're a rubber softening chemical used in all sorts of products we come into contact with daily; water bottles, beach balls, shower curtains, etc. They're also in some sex toys. The difference between water bottles and sex toys is that you don't put your water bottle inside you, next to more absorbent skin.Recent research has shown that phthalates served as endocrine disruptors for pregnant women with high amounts in their bodies, creating fetal abnormalities. Not only that, but these toys are harder to clean and they tend to be much more irritating to our delicate skin. For this and possibly other reasons, Denmark's parliament recently debated legislation that would limit these chemicals in adult products. Given the fact that there's absolutely no regulation of these chemicals in the US, I'm pretty excited about this. Of course, this doesn't affect anything we do at Babeland because we've already eliminated any toys we used to carry that had phthalates in them. That way, you don't have to worry about it - just shop away! It's all part of the many ways you can green your sex life for Earth Day and beyond. To learn more about phthalates, go here.
