The FDA announced yesterday that it is FINALLY approving Emergency Contraception for non-prescription use. There are some restrictions which I'll get to in a moment, but after six years of the Bush Administration, I'm amazed and excited about having something positive finally happen. The availability of this medication will help countless women who don't have a physician or can't get to a doctor before the time limit on EC runs out. Guys can pick up the prescriptions too, so tell everyone you know and I mean EVERYONE.There are restrictions which of course I'm not happy about. The first is that EC can only be sold to people 18 and over. Apparently, people can put their lives at risk by getting behind the wheel of a car at 16, but wouldn't be smart enough to understand the directions on how to take a pill. The other thing it's important to understand about this ruling is that EC is available without a prescription but it's not going to be stocked on the shelves. people will still have to get it from a pharmacist. Sometimes, the extra step of having to say out loud to a stranger what you need can deter people from getting EC.That being said, by the end of the year, millions of women will have greater access to a simple medication that can help them prevent unwanted pregnancies. That is truly something amazing. So go get a bottle of champagne and celebrate because it might be awhile before something this fantastic happens for women again. For more information on Emergency Contraception, check out this website called
