I'll be the first to admit that I'm a horrible letter writer. I'm more than willing to dash out an an e-mail but somehow, when I sit down to put pen to paper, everything I write seems silly. This gets especially difficult when I'm trying to express love-related thoughts. My partner says the most beautiful things to me and all I can respond is - "ditto". Lame. I need to step up my game. If you're like me (and my guess is that you are), I'd suggest Babeland's Love Letter Writing Workshop, happening this Sunday in our Soho location. Last year's workshop was fantastic - I actually got a letter started and even sent some of it, to great effect.Samara O'Shea is teaching the workshop and she's going to be amazing. She's a long time letter lover (in fact, that's what her website is called) and has so much letter writing experience, I know she'll have lots of fantastic advice and tips for your letters. This is a great idea if you want to express some loving thoughts for Valentine's Day but just aren't sure how to get them down on paper. I recently did a little interview with Samara about letter writing, in anticipation of her upcoming workshop:When did you first fall in love with letter writing?I received a love letter from a boy I fell for while at summer camp-I was 14. I read it over and over. I still have it. I was moved by it then, and I'm still amazed at the way it makes me smile fifteen years later. That sealed the deal. I was officially a letter lover. How is a letter different than an e-mail?A letter requires more thought and energy than an e-mail does, and the time you take to write becomes part of the gift you give to the recipient.Do you have a favorite letter that you've ever received? Sent?I have many favorite missives that I've sent and received. I put them all in my book For the Love of Letters (shameless plug!)How is writing a love letter different than writing any other kind of letter?A love letter is different than any other type of letter in that you really can't go wrong. Even if you scribble your feelings on a napkin and all the words are spelled incorrectly the recipient will be moved by the fact that you took the time to open yourself and shower them with compliments. Why do you think it can be so hard to write a love letter?I have two answers. In the beginning of a relationship, it's hard to write a love letter because it requires that you really put yourself out there. That's always frightening. If you're years into a relationship then sometimes it's hard to pull yourself out of the routine and actually write a love letter, but it's one of the many gestures needed to give the love a little oxygen.Who should write love letters?Everyone! I'm a single girl and I wrote love letters to my best girlfriends last Valentine's Day. It never hurts to remind your friends, family, and / or significant other how much they mean to you.If you were going to write a love letter to a sex toy, which toy would it be?My trusty vibrator. What would the first paragraph of that letter look like?My Dearest Vibes,How do I love thee? You rescued me from the agony of manual labor and revealed to me my true climactic ability. You are always in full favor of my fantasies-no matter how strange. You stand by me on cold nights and days so hot that I fear I might melt. You have yet to let me down. The batteries are another story, but you, my darling stimulator, are the most unselfish gadget I have ever had the pleasure of holding. in full favor of my fantasies-no matter how strange.
