New York is home to many strange things, one of which is an inflatable rat that unions use to shame companies that are holding out on contract, refusing to unionize, etc. The rat is gigantic and disgusting (I've heard there's also a cockroach!) and always gets confused stares from passersby who have no idea why they're seeing a giant rat on the street (as opposed to all the normal sized rats).Thank you to
Feministing for pointing out that the Christians have (sortof) copied this idea by creating the National Porn Sunday Elephant. This giant, blue, inflatable elephant is supposed to draw attention to the "elephant in the pew" - the porn problem in America's churches and Christian families.Sadly, the elephant does not do anything except float outside of churches.
Rex the Rabbit, however does. He's another part of the campaign that created the elephant. He not only writes on the website but shows up at porn conventions to make people feel bad about their life choices. Here's what Rex has to say:
When I was a young and nave rabbit, I made a lot of mistakes in the briar patch. I did not always make the right decisions in life especially when it came to sex. In many ways I felt that it was my God-given right to sleep with whomever I wanted to and have sex with as many hares as possible. I used carrots and my good looks to lure the women in.Though during this time of teenage rabbit rebellion, I always wondered if this was what God wanted for my life. Did he give me my striking black eyes and my cute button nose only so I could score with the lady hares? So God?s purpose for my life is to be holy. To be a rabbit filled with integrity. That?s what I want to do.
This rabbit sounds like quite the playboy bunny... (intentional?). Clearly these folks are trying to tackle the problem of sex outside of marriage and pornography, claiming that they are basically the same thing - equally sinful. Now, clearly I'm actually in favor of both sex before marriage and pornography but I also think that if you're striving to keep away from one of these, the other will certainly be a big help. Give up both? No way! What do you think? Is porn really the problem we're made to think it is? Are people really addicted? Does it really ruin your sex life?
