storeIt might seem impossible to believe, but working at a sex toy store can get boring. Well, maybe boring isn't the right word for it, but it's an intense job. You listen to the most intimate of problems, you try to help off-load at least some baggage, and you calm, support and encourage people. There are the occasional days when it seems like you can't make anyone happy or one too many people are rude or ask you inappropriate questions. After four years, I have a lot of happy memories and funny stories but I can also tell stories that astonish people; I even have a couple that I would consider tear-jerkers.

When the weight of what we're doing at Babeland starts to feel too heavy, I always hope for a joyful shift, and I got one this weekend. The store was packed because of our annual sale and I like it a bit crazy. It keeps me busy and the time just flies by. Plus, the more people I help, the bigger the difference I feel like I'm making!

Some days, the people that I help blur one into the other but for this shift, it seemed like I was moving from one fantastic customer to the next. There was the person whose wife had died recently out shopping for toys. When he told me this, I didn't really know how to respond, until he mentioned that she'd been sick for a very long time and he hadn't had sex for many years. It was a lot of fun watching him discover all of the amazing things that had happened in the world of sex toys in those intervening years. He ended up buying the Gigi - a stellar choice.I also helped a middle-aged man shopping for his very first anal toy. We had a terrific conversation about the different kinds of stimulation and he looked at the Little Flirt, the Ripple and the Bootie and ended up getting the Ripple. With lube, of course.

I helped a couple pick out some lube because one of them didn't like how their current lube tasted. I liked all of these customers so much, the only sad part is that I'll probably never see any of them again so I'll never find out how their purchases worked out for them. They left with a sex toy and hopefully some helpful information but I got something out of the interaction too - my conversations with these customers were exciting and fulfilling for me as a sex educator because we were able to talk in an open manner and I was able to give them helpful information. We developed instant report and I knew that they felt comfortable with me and I felt comfortable with them. We laughed and smiled and just generally had a good time. Basically what I'm saying is that it was fun.

When the days get long or the interactions get intense, I try to remember these awesome customers and wait for the next one to walk through the door to remind me of why I do this work and why this job is, truly, the best job I could have.
