The United States Supreme Court, home of such monumental decisions as
Roe v. Wade and
Lawrence v. Texas has decided that they
won't hear the case of an employee at an adult bookstore in Texas who showed a dildo to an undercover cop and was arrested for it. Texas has strict laws around promoting "sex toys shaped like sexual organs". Texas also has limits on how many sex toys one person may carry around at a time (it's some random number like 17) and makes people buying sex toys sign forms that say they are using them for educational or novelty purposes only. These laws, besides stigmatizing sex toys, are clearly violations of the right to privacy as decided in such cases as
Roe and
Lawrence. Are there laws around what kind of erotica can be written or what kinds of beds can be sold? No. And there should be no laws around how where and when I can purchase the
dildo of my choice. Instead of taking on cases that have already been decided like the
Ban On Abortion (the so-called Partial Birth Abortion Act) they should take a moment to strike down these rediculous laws. They could also take on
parental notification laws but that would probably be asking too much. For now, let's just hope that we can continue to buy and use our
Hitachi Magic Wands in peace.
