One of the topics I get asked about the most is breaking into erotica. I?ve edited over a dozen books of erotica, ranging from lesbian erotica to foot fetish erotica to spanking, bondage, exhibitionism/voyeurism, crossdressing, and BDSM, and written over 100 published stories about everything from lap dances to blowjobs to fisting. I started out in law school (yes, law school, but I am not a lawyer nor do I play one on TV). I had been reading lots of erotica and was at a very sexually experimental time in my life and figured I could cook up a juicy story, so I did. It was called ?Monica and Me,? and was about, well, me and Monica Lewinsky, and it spiraled from there.Back then, I probably wrote maybe one story every two months. Now I write one at least every two weeks. I?ve found that if I put my mind to it, I can write erotica about almost anything, including things that don?t personally turn me on. You can write about things that have happened to you (and since it?s fiction, you can change whatever you want), or things you want to do, or things you?ve read about, or aliens.Cover of my new erotica book Sex and CandyI've written a few gay male erotica stories, like my New Year's Eve story "Live from New York" in Where the Boys Are, that I'm very proud of because I had to really make them up from scratch. Anything and everything goes. I?m just wrapping up a book coming out soon called Sex and Candy which is about?yes, you guessed it, sex and candy. I?ve got spanking with twizzlers, cupcake sex, baking as foreplay, cotton candy, phone sex with chocolate, and so much more. What I love the most about editing erotica anthologies is that if I were to write all the stories myself, they?d never in a million years be as wild and inventive as what my authors come up with. I love the mix of styles and viewpoints and settings. And really, erotica can be what you make it. It doesn?t have to be all shiny, happy orgasms and dirty words every other sentence. I?m not suggesting you go out of your way to make it dark and depressing, but bringing some realism, done well, makes you connect with your audience. In my anthology He?s on Top, Shanna Germain wrote about kink and breast cancer, looking at a male top who feels guilty about playing with his wife who has breast cancer, but she is the one who pushes him to treat her the way he used to?which means breaking out the nipple clamps. Here are some great resources to learn more, read some great stories, and get writing. I especially like this spanking story ?Possession (verb)? by Rick Roberts. Two common things I hear are worries about revealing real names and not being sure what to write about. As to the first, I can assure you that over half the authors I publish use pseudonyms. I recommend finding one that sounds good to you and is not quite so pseudonym-sounding (same goes for character names in my opinion; the more outlandish and ridiculous, the more thrown off I get, unless the story really calls for a crazy name). Second, you can spin an erotica story in under 1,000 or 1,500 words, and sometimes the editors even ask specifically for that.I?ve just started teaching erotic writing workshops (and hope to teach one at Babeland in New York soon, hint hint!) so watch my website for details about that.I?ll start you off on your first assignment (what you do with it is up to you?I absolutely cannot read your stories and give feedback, sorry, I?m swamped, but that?s what all the links above are for). I did this while teaching recently and it was a lot of fun. Write a story that incorporates at least three sex scenes TOYS. I meant toys! Clearly, my brain is rotting and I didn't read this carefully enough. So sorry. So yeah, incorporate three sex toys into your erotica story. The great thing is that this can also relate to spanking, bondage, public sex, etc. And "toys" can be actual sex toys of the type found on this very site or household implements or homemade ones, etc. Go! weekly online magazine with erotica, reviews, articles, and more.
