condomsWhen a bunch of Puritans decided they were going to leave England and sail to a new land, they left because they wanted their religious freedom. We all know that story, it's the back bone of the United States' rebellious little history. But do we ever stop to consider why the Puritans wanted religious freedom? They were appalled at the sacreligious way that other Christians in England were acting. The Puritans wanted the freedom to be more restricted. I feel like that explains alot about why this country simultaneously exports both porn and prudishness; both sex and celibacy. We're a country built on the idea that one should have the freedom to do whatever restrictive thing one wants in our own little screwed up way. That is why the idea of not only having a Masturbate-a-thon but broadcasting it on TV is appalling to most Americans. Our Puritan sensibilities say "shhhhh! don't talk about sex!" and our capitalist side says "who could we get to buy advertising?" Well, Britain doesn't seem to be quite so confused. Last month, I blogged about the Masturbate-a-thon that they were going to have. The results are in and it was a resounding success. Not only that, but they raised a ton of money for some great charities. To top it all off, this article has an interview from Joycelyn Elders, former Attorney General of the United States under Bill Clinton who was fired for saying that sex ed classes should talk about masturbation.I love Joycelyn Elders because she has the guts to stand up and say what she believes, even when she knows that most prudish Americans would be shocked (shocked, I tell you!) that an older black lady from Georgia would say such things! This article discusses not only the masturbate-a-thon, but why it is that Britain broadcasts theirs on TV while the United States fires people for even discussing the concept. The answer? America - the home of Hustler and Cum Buckets 1-17 is prudish. Go figure.I think we got the wrong boat.
