If you read this blog regularly, you probably already know that when it comes to porn, sisters are doin' it for themselves. Women are watching more porn, writing about porn and making it too. This means there's a whole new world of women's porn out there to be explored. The
Press-Telegraph and the
Daily News have recently included women's porn as a part of a series on the porn industry. They interviewed a friend of mine, Jamye Waxman, who is working in the industry as a sex educator and producer of porn. She's going places, just watch her:
"As more women infiltrate the industry and show they want to be there, the more positive the product will be," Waxman said. "There's all these things that adult films can offer you if you don't look too deeply into it."
The article also mentions Babeland! That's great to hear as we've been doing everything we can to encourage women's involvement in the porn industry - either by watching it or making it. We used to hold a yearly event called Women Watch Porn where we invited women to a movie theater to sit down and watch some of our favorite porn clips. This tradition is being carried on by a terrific store in Toronto that recently had a feminist porn awards. If you're looking for innovative films, check out their
winners or check out our
Favorites section on our website. And of course, anyone at our
stores would be happy to give you the full porn tour. What does all of this mean? I hope it means that the demand for porn that appeals to women is greater. As our director of marketing said:
"I think a lot of it is women giving themselves permission to watch porn. Women have been told for many years that they are not supposed to watch anything stimulating."
For so long women thought they didn't like porn. Then, some women realized that if porn is made by men, for men, it might not appeal to women. When women made porn with their pleasure in mind, it exploded. And, it turns out that men like it too. It makes sense to me since logically, women having real orgasms will always be hotter than women having fake orgasms. Plus, if you want to learn what women want, why would you ever watch porn made by men?I'm happy to see women exploring the visual aspect of their sex lives. It's fun to help people explore this new world whether their with their partners or themselves. I hope that it only keeps growing.
